Welcome Spring in Mayfair!

We are excited to welcome in the new season at The Washington Mayfair! There’s something special about London in spring. After the colder winter months, the city begins to wake up again — parks fill with colour, the days get longer, and there’s a real buzz in the air as people are… well… full of the joys of spring!

Spring is also when London’s events calendar really comes to life, giving even more reasons why you should plan a London trip.

Iconic Spring Events in London

One of the biggest moments in the city’s spring calendar is the London Marathon. Every April, thousands of runners take on the famous 26.2-mile route, passing some of London’s most iconic landmarks along the way. Even if you’re not taking part, the atmosphere across the city is fantastic, with crowds lining the streets to cheer runners on. This year the London Marathon is scheduled for Sunday 26th April 2026.

Another highlight of the season is the beautiful RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This year taking place 19-23 May and held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, this world-famous event showcases incredible garden designs, vibrant floral displays and creative planting ideas. It’s a celebration of all things spring and a wonderful experience whether you’re a keen gardener or simply enjoy seeing London in full bloom. Plus, local areas love to get involved in their own horticultural competitions and host ‘in bloom’ celebrations. Make sure to check the local areas for even more floral fun if you’re visiting in May.

A Spring Visit to the Serpentine Galleries

If you enjoy art and culture, spring is also a great time to visit the Serpentine Galleries. Set within the beautiful surroundings of Kensington Gardens, the galleries are known for their exciting exhibitions and their famous annual pavilion.

The new season begins in March with a fresh programme of exhibitions. This year includes work by celebrated British artist David Hockney, whose vibrant and innovative pieces have made him one of the most influential artists of his generation.

Visitors will also be able to see an exhibition by contemporary painter Cecily Brown, known for her energetic and expressive style.

Alongside the exhibitions, the Serpentine Pavilion returns once again. Each year an internationally renowned architect designs a temporary structure on the gallery lawn, creating a unique space where visitors can sit, relax and experience architecture in a completely different way. The pavilion for 2026 is designed by Lanza Atelier and takes inspiration from the shape of the nearby Serpentine Lake and the classic English architectural feature of a “crinkle crankle” wall. It’s not to be missed.

Secret Gardens and Outdoor Escapes

London isn’t all high-rise buildings and concrete… You may not realise but London is over 40% green space, which is a grand total of around 3000 parks! You may have visited some of the Royal Parks on your travels, but what about some of the lesser-known areas?

At The Washington Mayfair, we love Mount Street Gardens, a charming, quieter retreat where you can enjoy a tranquil moment in amongst the hustle and bustle of London, this time of year is perfect to admire the early spring flowers. Or for some history combined with fresh air, Berkeley Square Gardens is the perfect spot for a stroll. Berkley Square Gardens is a traditional London square surrounded by London Plane trees planted in 1789, which are among some of Mayfair’s most oldest trees!

For a chance to explore hidden gems, unique rooftop gardens, and historic walled enclosures, don’t miss the London Open Gardens event. Taking place on June 7th and 8th, 2025, this annual event opens the gates to normally inaccessible green spaces across the city. Book now and enjoy 20% off your ticket with their early bird offer!

Unusual Cultural Highlights

Mayfair loves a gallery and while major galleries draw the crowds, opt for a visit to The Gagosian or Halcyon Gallery. These two hidden gems showcase contemporary art in ever-changing exhibitions. The Halcyon Gallery famously hosted an Andy Warhol exhibition in 2024 and is currently hosting a Bob Dylan retrospective exhibit.

Hidden Dining and Elegant Bars

Mayfair’s upscale reputation comes with a dining scene to match, and it doesn’t disappoint. Our first hidden gem is tucked away off London’s Berkley Square, The Cocochine is an intimate eatery which celebrates art and craftsmanship with some of the very best seasonal produce from Sri-Lankan born chef Larry Jayasekara.

For our second gem, if you enjoy a hearty British Classic then you’ll love The Mayfair Chippy. Here you’ll find fish and chips done right with dining on par with any fine dining experience. Awarded a 1AA Rosette, Michelin Guide Accreditation we love this quintessentially British restaurant.
