Golden Leaves & Luxury Streets: Visiting Mayfair in October

Mayfair is one of London’s most prestigious districts, known for its elegant Georgian architecture, high-end boutiques, and art-filled galleries. In October, the neighbourhood comes alive with a unique mix of autumnal atmosphere and world-class experiences.

One of the most compelling reasons to visit in October is the beauty of the season itself. Nearby Hyde Park and Green Park, transform into golden landscapes with crisp leaves underfoot, perfect for leisurely walks or scenic photography. The cooler weather makes it ideal for strolling along Bond Street, Mount Street, or Savile Row, where luxury fashion houses and heritage tailors showcase their latest collections.

Art enthusiasts will find October particularly special, as it coincides with Frieze London, one of the world’s most significant contemporary art fairs. Mayfair’s galleries and auction houses, such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, often host exclusive exhibitions and events during this period (16th – 19th October) making it a cultural hotspot.

Food and drink are another highlight. Mayfair is home to some of London’s most renowned Michelin-starred restaurants and glamorous hotels, many of which introduce seasonal menus in October. Afternoon tea at The Washington Mayfair Hotel feels especially cosy against the autumn backdrop.

Additionally, October is less crowded than the summer tourist season, allowing for a more relaxed and immersive experience. Whether you are exploring historic squares, indulging in fine dining, or enjoying the area’s thriving art scene, Mayfair in October offers an elegant and atmospheric escape in the heart of London – and with our Autumn Break In The City Offer, autumn really is the perfect time of year to get away!

September – The Month to Visit London

None of us want to think about the end of Summer but as August comes to a close, we can feel Autumn starting to creep in. Leaves are beginning to litter the ground in the Royal Parks, and the mornings feel just that little bit crisper. Despite the arrival of some signs of Autumn, it’s not the time to grab your cosy jumpers and hot chocolates just yet… There is still time for the warmer days to continue in London throughout September and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the remainder of Summer throughout the next few weeks. In this article we are going to talk about how to make the most of September in London.

September is a great time to visit London as the streets get a little quieter after the summer holiday rush. As the kids get back to school, the queues at some of the top attractions like the museums begin to ease. You might even not have to squeeze on to an underground train! September temperatures average between 13°C to 20°C, which means it’s still pleasant enough to dine al fresco at lunch, take a pedalo out on Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park, or browse London’s top attractions coat-free. If you’re feeling really brave, the Serpentine Lido, one of London’s top open water swimming locations, is still open if you fancy a refreshing dip and something a little bit out of the ordinary.

September weather is perfect for enjoying The Royal Parks as we discussed in our article last month ‘How to Enjoy London’s Royal Parks’ or if the evenings do turn a little chilly why not make the most of the indoors and choose a West End show, for more information on The West End take a look at our article from the beginning of the year  – ‘Start Your 2025 in The West End’.  September also hosts some annual events of its own like the London Design Festival (13-20 September) and the Totally Thames Festival running throughout the whole month along London’s iconic river The Thames. These cultural festivals lead nicely into October into London’s most contemporary art fair ‘Frieze London’ based in Regent’s Park.

At The Washington Mayfair Hotel we have the perfect base for you to explore London in September or whatever the month. Situated in the district of Mayfair, which is a central location, close to Buckingham Palace, The West End, Green Park, St.James Park and Hyde Park, not to mention attractions such as the Royal Academy of Arts and various museums. Our hotel is a favourite of business and leisure travellers, seeking a home from home experience with all their needs catered for. Make the most of September 2025 in London, take a look at our rooms and suites and book your holiday in London.

If you weren’t fortunate enough to secure tickets in the ballot there is no need to fret. You can still be part of all the action. Wimbledon is one of the few British sporting events where you can actually get tickets on the day. In fact, the whole system has become an iconic part of The Championships with some even preferring to be a part of ‘The Queue’!

How to Get On-the-Day Tickets for Wimbledon

Every day a limited number of court tickets and a large number of grounds passes are released for purchase. Our tip is to make sure you join the queue as early as possible to secure the best tickets possible. Grounds passes are very reasonably priced and although not gaining you entry to the top three courts, allows you to access most areas (including court no.3, 12 and 18) and still view top matches. Plus, the chance to purchase re-sale tickets for the best matches as the day progresses.

Mayfair’s Hidden Gems and Exclusive Experiences

March in Mayfair is a time of quiet luxury, fresh inspiration, and exclusive experiences waiting to be uncovered. As spring breathes new life into London, it’s the perfect moment to explore this elegant district’s hidden treasures. Join us as we talk about some of Mayfair’s best hidden gems.

Secret Gardens and Outdoor Escapes

London isn’t all high-rise buildings and concrete… You may not realise but London is over 40% green space, which is a grand total of around 3000 parks! You may have visited some of the Royal Parks on your travels, but what about some of the lesser-known areas?

At The Washington Mayfair, we love Mount Street Gardens, a charming, quieter retreat where you can enjoy a tranquil moment in amongst the hustle and bustle of London, this time of year is perfect to admire the early spring flowers. Or for some history combined with fresh air, Berkeley Square Gardens is the perfect spot for a stroll. Berkley Square Gardens is a traditional London square surrounded by London Plane trees planted in 1789, which are among some of Mayfair’s most oldest trees!

For a chance to explore hidden gems, unique rooftop gardens, and historic walled enclosures, don’t miss the London Open Gardens event. Taking place on June 7th and 8th, 2025, this annual event opens the gates to normally inaccessible green spaces across the city. Book now and enjoy 20% off your ticket with their early bird offer!

Unusual Cultural Highlights

Mayfair loves a gallery and while major galleries draw the crowds, opt for a visit to The Gagosian or Halcyon Gallery. These two hidden gems showcase contemporary art in ever-changing exhibitions. The Halcyon Gallery famously hosted an Andy Warhol exhibition in 2024 and is currently hosting a Bob Dylan retrospective exhibit.

Hidden Dining and Elegant Bars

Mayfair’s upscale reputation comes with a dining scene to match, and it doesn’t disappoint. While the area is packed with high-end restaurants and fine dining spots, there are also plenty of hidden gems to discover. Our first hidden gem is tucked away off London’s Berkley Square, The Cocochine is an intimate eatery which celebrates art and craftsmanship with some of the very best seasonal produce from Sri-Lankan born chef Larry Jayasekara.

For our second gem, if you enjoy a hearty British Classic then you’ll love The Mayfair Chippy. Here you’ll find fish and chips done right with dining on par with any fine dining experience. Awarded a 1AA Rosette, Michelin Guide Accreditation we love this quintessentially British restaurant.

Luxury & Comfort at The Washington Mayfair

At the heart of Mayfair, lies The Washington Mayfair Hotel, which we believe is the best London hidden gem. So many of our guests love our location and our comfortable rooms inspired by iconic 1920s décor. Our home-from-home hotel is the perfect base to unwind after a day of exploring or for relaxing on the perfect London break.
